GOT NOTHING TO DO ON SATURDAY - 26TH APRIL THEN READ ON.......

Welcome to The 2014 Great Yarmouth Scavenger Hunt!

All you need to take part is a birth date before 1996 a a team of 5 people, a sense of humour, a camera and the £10 team registration fee which goes to the charity.

Challenges fall into one of 3 categories; find it, make it and do it. At the end of the day the team who have scored the most points by completing challenges wins. Points are awarded for creativity, originality and hilarity so it's not always who does the most that gets the top spot.

This year the scavenger hunt will be raising money for The Leah Wilby Foundation. Find out more about them here: www.theleahwilbyfoundation.co.uk

The hunt will be kicking off from Mocha Coffee Lounge on Regent Street, and it's from there that you'll be able to collect your challenge lists. We'll give you 7 hours from the time you register to complete the challenges you choose to (though 5pm is our cut off time to allow for judging so don't arrive later than 10am)

We'll be announcing the winners and holding a raffle in aid of The Leah Wilby Foundation from 8pm in Pub on The Prom, where some fantastic prizes will be up for grabs.

Around The World Event

Second year, Level 3 Travel and Tourism students are hosting a event in aid of CLIC Sargent, a charity supporting children and young people with cancer. They'd like to invite students and staff from Great Yarmouth College and their families to attend.

The 'Around The World' event is at Great Yarmouth Racecourse on Thursday 22nd May between 6:30pm and 10:00pm.

Entertainment will include a performance from local band 'Time Well Wasted', a quiz, raffle and auction with a chance to win/bid on a selection of prizes kindly donated by local businesses including attraction tickets, weekends away, and beauty treatments.

Tickets cost £20 and include a 2 course meal (starter and main). There will be a dessert table with a selection of deserts, priced individually.

Helena Kennedy Foundation Awards 2014

Are you hoping to attend university in September? Worried how you are going to pay for it? Then the HKF Awards may be able to help.

The Foundation provides support to students whose personal and financial circumstances make progression to higher education difficult. The HKF award is a package of financial, personal and practical support and opportunities designed to support transition into higher education, enhance the student’s experience at university and improve chances of employment after graduation. Successful students usually receive a bursary of £1500 together with on-going support, mentoring and training to help them achieve their potential.

All of the information you need to submit applications can be find on the HKF website (http://www.hkf.org.uk) where the awards page is located (http://www.hkf.org.uk/hkf-awards). You do not need to indicate which award they are applying for, but if your personal circumstances, HEI or course choice match the criteria for any of the awards it is important to include this information in your personal statement so that HKF can match you to the available awards.

The college can only submit five applications, so don’t wait to apply. Applications are being accepted now; closing date is March 28 2014. For more information or support in completing your application, please visit Anton in Student Services.

Choose a bowl of porridge, cereal or fruit plus a drink of fruit juice, tea or coffee. Served between 8.00am-8:45am each morning free of charge!

Sport and Exercise opportunities for students

Body Blitz
Body Blitz for students is starting on Thursday, 4:15pm-5pm in the Theatre. The sessions are designed to improve fitness and burn fat.

Rugby
The college rugby team are always on the lookout for new players. If you know of anyone who may be interested then training is every Tuesday 12-1 on the field.

Eating House pledge to support healthy eating

The Eating House team work hard to provide healthy food for all who wish to purchase it. Here are some of the positive action we have taken on your behalf.

     
  • All our savoury dishes are seasoned using ‘ low salt ‘ substitute.
  •  
  • Rice based dishes are made using 50% brown rice.
  •  
  • We use low fat spreads in place of butter.
  •  
  • Semi & skimmed milk used in place of full fat.
  •  
  • 50% artificial sweetener used in our home made cakes.
  •  
  • Fresh fruit, fruit salad and low fat yoghurts are available.
  •  
  • All our pasta dishes are made using 50% wholemeal pasta wherever possible.
  •  
  • Beef/chicken burgers are all oven cooked to reduce fat content and made from 90% beef or chicken breast.
  •  
  • When we serve chicken/turkey we remove the skin to reduce fat content.
  •  
  • New potato and pasta are always available as alternative to chips.
  •  
  • Compound salads are made using low fat yoghurt and dressings.
  •  
  • Our range of sandwiches include wholemeal bread and reduced fat mayo and spreads.
  •  
  • A vegetable based hot meal is available each day.
Exams News

Changes to the delivery of certificates

Certificates will no longer be posted at the end of the year. Students can now collect these from the exams office (which can be found near the information centre). If students would prefer their certificates to be posted together at the end of the course, then there will be a £3 charge and there is a form at reception or in the exams office to arrange this. This does not apply to apprentices who will receive their certificates upon completion of all parts of their course.
